Mia Khalifa, also known as Mia Callista, is an American porn actress and model of Lebanese origin.
Mia Khalifa was born on 10 February 1993 in Beirut, Lebanon to a Lebanese Catholic Maronite family. Her father is a conservative-minded supporter of the US Republican Party and the Lebanese Forces party (after the terrorist attack in Beirut in 2012 and to cheer her parents up, Mia had a cross tattooed depicting the party).
In 2000, Mia’s family moved to the USA. As a teenager, she settled in Montgomery County, Maryland and attended Northwest High School. She then went on to graduate from the University of Texas at El Paso with a Bachelor of Arts in History.
Mia Khalifa Career in the porn industry
Mia Khalifa started her career in the porn industry in October 2014. Prior to that, she was working in a fast food restaurant of the Whataburger chain, where she received an offer from a customer to star in porn films. On 28 December of the same year, she became porn star number 1 on Pornhub, overtaking well-known porn actress Lisa Ann.
It is worth noting that although Mia sometimes appears as a Muslim, she was born into a Catholic family (Christians make up half of Lebanon’s population) and does not identify herself as a Muslim. Despite this, some media have been quick to label her in their publications as “Muslim” and Lebanon as “one of the most Muslim countries”. Moreover, on Pornhub, her films are listed under the category of “Muslim porn” and “hijab porn”.
With 1.5 million views, Mia Khalifa has become the most popular porn actress on Pornhub. According to that site, the number of search queries increased fivefold between 3 and 6 January 2015. About a quarter of these queries were made from Lebanon. A significant proportion of the requests came from nearby Syria and Jordan. According to website statistics as of 30 September 2015, Mia Khalifa was the second most searched for among both Android and iOS device users, just behind Lisa Ann and Kim Kardashian respectively.
At the end of 2015, Mia Khalifa managed to move up 197 positions in Pornhub’s search ranking and came in second place, ahead of Lisa Ann, but behind Kim Kardashian. Compared to last year, she was searched for by 2129% more (3rd place ranking).
Mia Khalifa’s performance was met with harsh criticism in the Middle East, where she was accused of embarrassing herself and her country. Mia’s parents cut off contact with her because of her choice of profession. They dissociated themselves from their daughter’s actions, saying her entry into the porn industry was a result of living in a different country and culture to theirs, and that her actions did not reflect her upbringing.
In several pornographic films, Mia Khalifa starred dressed in a hijab for Bang Bros. Many found this offensive and some even began to threaten her with death. In an interview with The Washington Post she justified that the controversial scene was satire and should not have been taken too seriously, she also pointed out that any Hollywood movie shows Muslims in a much more negative light than the makers of pornography.
